Lead Technologist – Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
Location: Chelmsford (2 days a week)
Salary: Up to £85,000 + 10%
We’re looking for a Lead Technologist with deep expertise in AI/ML to drive technical excellence across projects in defence, security, and advanced data analytics.
You’ll guide teams working on cutting-edge areas including reinforcement learning, LLMs, NLP, knowledge graphs, remote sensing, RF signal processing, and autonomy.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead complex AI/ML R&D projects and provide engineering assurance

Mentor and support junior researchers and developers

Shape and direct novel research in collaboration with universities and partners

Present insights to stakeholders across technical and non-technical domains
About You:

PhD in a relevant field with 10+ years of AI/ML experience

Proven track record leading technical teams and securing research funding

Strong background in areas like NLP, computer vision, graph ML, or signal processing

Skilled in Python and familiar with frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow

Experience with engineering assurance and proposal writing (e.g. Dstl, EPSRC)
