The Opportunity

We're seeking a Lead Data Engineer to join a high-performing consultancy team delivering large-scale data platforms and AI-enablement programmes within the UK public sector and healthcare space. This role is ideal for a senior data professional with strong leadership experience in modern data engineering and a track record of delivering impactful solutions for complex, high-volume environments.

You’ll be leading the design, build, and optimisation of robust data pipelines and architectures, while also mentoring engineers, setting standards, and driving data best practices in agile delivery teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, high-performance data solutions that support analytical and operational workloads.

  • Own technical delivery of major data components or subsystems within multi-disciplinary agile teams.

  • Champion engineering best practices and drive quality across the codebase, pipelines, and deployment processes.

  • Collaborate with architects and stakeholders to define robust, secure, and performant data pipelines (ETL/ELT) and storage systems.

  • Provide leadership, mentoring and coaching to junior engineers; support career development within the team.

  • Work closely with Ops and Security teams to ensure data platforms are production-ready and compliant.

  • Contribute to delivery planning, technical estimation, and solution assurance activities.

Required Experience

  • Strong experience leading data engineering teams in a consulting or delivery environment.

  • Hands-on expertise in modern data engineering languages — Python, Scala, or Java.

  • Deep knowledge of SQL and distributed data processing frameworks.

  • Experience with cloud-based platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, particularly Databricks, Informatica, or similar.

  • Understanding of data modelling (analytical & operational) and non-functional performance tuning.

  • Strong communicator, able to present complex technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.

  • Previous delivery into public sector or healthcare clients is essential.

Desirable Experience

  • Familiarity with data warehouse design, dimensional modelling, and batch/streaming techniques.

  • Cloud certification in AWS, Azure, or GCP (data-focused).

  • Active participation in the data engineering or open-source community.

  • Working knowledge or strong interest in AI technologies and how they integrate with data platforms.

What You’ll Get

  • Competitive salary: £90k–£110k DOE

  • Performance-based bonus

  • Hybrid working from anywhere in the UK

  • Exposure to impactful data-driven projects across UK government and public healthcare

If you’re passionate about data, enjoy mentoring others, and want to work on projects that drive real change, this is your chance to lead at the cutting edge of public sector transformation.
